Zine fest in Queens, NYC tomorrow

Tomorrow, Saturday 25 February, is the Queens Zine Fest! Astoria Bookshop is one of the hosts.

A zine fest celebrates a mash-up of art, letters, stories, and emotions. The Queens Zine Fest includes comic book artists, makers of art ephemera (like stickers, buttons, cards, etc), and writers who might also make graphic novels or children’s books. Our Zine Fest on Saturday, February 25 from 12noon to 6pm includes events at Everyone Comics (41-26 27th St, LIC), Astoria Bookshop (31-29 31st St, Astoria) and Sunnyside Arts (45-18 Skillman Ave, Sunnyside). Zine Fest patrons who visit all three locations (and collect a business card from each) will receive a 25% discount off one item from each shop.

KC Zine Con!

It's KC Zine Con today, which means that I've updated my etsy!

Stand by for musings on true kvlt, festive monsters, magic realism, and a ton of other stuff.

Because it's a holiday weekend in the US, everything is currently on sale on etsy, as is our lovely t-shirt on threadless, so please come and take a look.

Thank you as always for your support, guys!

(alternate blurb here).

KC Zine Con!

Signal boosting: KC Zine Con are still accepting applications for their virtual zine fair in September.

I will be "there," and I'm super excited because even if this is only on the internet, I've never done a fanzine fair in America, so I'm excited about getting to talk to new people about the kind of nonsense that I like.

Pop up if you're also "tabling." Hope to see you all soon!

Virtual Swansea Zine Fest!

Signal boosting: It's half an hour until Virtual Swansea Zine Fest!

It'll be better than spending another day in lockdown watching Netflix, promise. :p

Signal Boosting: #QuarantZine

Kawaii Queer Fanzine Fair @ Canada Water Library

Come and say hello to me at Canada Water Library where they are playing Belle and Sebastian in the background and I am sitting behind a table full of fanzines.

Come and be my friend!

Kawaii Queer Fanzine Fair @ Canada Water Library

Hello, hello!

A super quick mention to say that on the 29th February, as part of LGBT History Month, my work is holding a little fanzine fair at Canada Water Library.

Kawaii!

If you have free time, please do come along and say hello, and if you have even more free time and want to spread the word, please feel free to retweet about it. It's going to be quite low-key, but I'm super excited for it, so please do come and say hi!

Steno zine

"Gotta Type Fast!: An introduction to hobbyist stenography" by Ewen Cluney is available (interior photo). "A lot of it is about the technical details of how to get started with open-source steno, but I also get a bit into the history and culture around it, which is pretty interesting if you're into that kind of thing."

Monster Calendar

Avast! Happy New Year! 🎉

I feel as if this is the last possible occasion that I can, in good conscience, plug my little fanzine of wintery festive traditions and monsters, so, ah, here we are. Fashioned on an old PC and a velobind machine, it contains all my advent calendar entries from 2008 - 2016, but, ah, if you want a more up-to-date version, there's also a digital version covering everything until 2018.

That's it. That's my sales pitch. I'll be quiet about this now until December 2020.

Gosh. Feels like I haven't spoken to you guys all year.

Boom boom.

/end dad jokes.

Upcoming UK Zine Fairs

Hi all! Hopefully there's still someone reading this!

So, just a brief post about two upcoming zine fairs in the UK: Norwich Millennium Library Zine Fair 2019 on the 23rd November in, you guessed it, Norwich, and Weirdo Zine Fest On Edge Edition on the 30th November near London Bridge in South London.

I will be there! So please come and say hello if you are so inclined!

Not Trans Enough! zine -- suggestions on where to find it?

The compilation zine "Not Trans Enough!" came out a few years ago and the "how to get a copy" page points to an Etsy user who isn't on Etsy anymore. It looks like I could buy a PDF or ePub online, but if I wanted a paper copy, could anyone suggest where I could buy one? I live in New York City, USA.

"So You Want to Be a Wizard" and zine PDF making program

Julia Evans has a new zine out called "So You Want To Be a Wizard" about "how to learn hard things and get better at programming":

* debugging skills!

* how to ask questions!

* why learning to read code is crucial! (& tips for doing that)

* how to design/plan projects!

* how to build expertise with a complicated system!

She's also published a command-line program to help turn zine pages into printable booklets.

Any advice for a first time perzine writer?

I've finally mustered up the guts to write my very own perzine, after years of reading and admiring others. Now my only problem is I don't know where to start.

What have you written in your first issue? Do you talk about where you live, where you've grown up, what you love? Long term stuff or in the minute this-is-what-I'm-thinking-about-right-now stuff? How much do you think a reader wants or needs to know about you to be interested in reading your perzine?

Newish zine: "Playing With Python: 2 of my favorite lenses"

Late last year I made a zine to hand out at Maker Faire: "Playing with Python: 2 of my favorite lenses". That blog entry also includes page-by-page scans and transcripts, process photos, and thank-yous.

Feel free to view it in that blog post, view it as a PDF, or download and print the single US letter-sized sheet of paper and cut and fold it for yourself into an 8-pager! I'm such a fan of the format, because it doesn't require any stapling so it's simpler to reproduce, and because when I'm giving it away to someone they can engage in the process of making it. In 2015 I gave away a bunch of my zines at Maker Faire and passers-by really got into learning how to cut and fold them. In 2016 I remember at least one child coloring her "Quill & Scroll" after folding it, which, my heart just grew three sizes, you know?

Quill & Scroll

My friend and I made "Quill & Scroll", a children's book-style zine about a hedgehog who runs an all-night bookstore for other nocturnal animals. People call it "adorable". Feel free to view it as a PDF, or download and print the single US sheet of paper and cut and fold it for yourself into an 8-pager!

Cat, Dog, and Badger Each Own A Bookstore. They Are Friends.

I just came across this community and realized I had not yet joined it and let y'all know about "Cat, Dog, and Badger Each Own A Bookstore. They Are Friends." It's 8 pages including illustrations and has a children's-book vibe. At the link you can view it as individual images, read the text as plaintext, and/or download the whole thing to print on one sheet of paper and cut/fold. Enjoy!
